This June, the talented team from @1860 Winnipeg Arts are diving into a different side of arts and cultural entrepreneurship. With support from the Arctic Buying Company Winnipeg, young individuals from Indigenous, Black, and rural communities have been exploring the world of northern shipping and supply chains.
This hands-on learning experience marks a significant departure from the predominantly virtual activities that defined the past two years of projects, training and workshops.
One of the areas the group is learning about this week is how to package and ship art – from carvings to crafts – between communities. With several emerging youth artists, and some of the parents and family members who create arts, hats, carvings and gloves we thought it would be interesting to learn how to better package and safely ship some of those goods. This experience also helped build knowledge that can help sell at community marketplaces, farmers markets, etc.
Thanks to the Arctic Buying Company Winnipeg for always supporting our program, and for giving us a behind the scenes look at the work that goes into shipping everything from arts to food between northern and southern Canada. We’re learning a lot this summer.
