Why aren't we taking orders now?

We’re still learning! At the heart of the Niriqatiginnga programme is a Youth, Arts and Media project. It’s a transformative opportunity for urban and newly-urban Indigenous youth to engage with participatory food security projects while honing their skills in arts, entrepreneurship and digital media literacy. As a pilot program, youth and aspiring entrepreneurs receive comprehensive training and exposure to various food sector entrepreneurship roles. Through hands-on activities, they develop life, career and job skills, supporting outreach, relationship building, organizational development and engagement.

This project supports SDG 2 by empowering Indigenous youth with entrepreneurship skills in the food sector and addressing food insecurity in northern communities through initiatives like "Aqpik Jalapeño," promoting local food systems and economic opportunities while ensuring access to nutritious and culturally relevant foods. Through mentorship, training, and community engagement, it contributes to the goal of achieving zero hunger by fostering sustainable livelihoods and promoting healthy eating habits in Indigenous communities.

The other Arctic gold ...

Cloudberries (Rubus chamaemorus) have a unique growth cycle that is closely tied to the Arctic climate. They typically begin their growth in early spring, with the emergence of delicate white flowers. These flowers are pollinated by insects, such as bees and flies, during the brief Arctic summer.

After pollination, the berries slowly begin to develop, taking several weeks to ripen. This ripening process can vary depending on environmental conditions, but it generally occurs from mid to late summer. During this time, the berries transform from green to a vibrant golden-yellow or amber color, indicating that they are ready for harvest.

The growth of cloudberries is inherently tied to the harsh conditions of the Arctic landscape, where the short growing season, soil conditions and extreme temperatures pose challenges for cultivation. As a result, the time it takes for cloudberries to grow and ripen can take up to two years!

Despite the challenges, the patience required to nurture cloudberries through their growth cycle is rewarded with a uniquely flavorful fruit that captures the essence of the Arctic wildernes.

Advancing Economic Reconciliation

Niriqatiginnga is co-designed with a wide range of industry and cross-sectoral stakeholder input, including: farmers, food producers, arts and culture, academia, government and food systems innovators. In December 2023, this component of Niriqatiginnga was approved for funding from the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Program – Indigenous Agriculture and Food Systems program with Manitoba Agriculture

The Niriqatiginnga program places a strong emphasis on food sector literacy and training, equipping Inuit, First Nations and Métis youth with the knowledge and tools to design and deliver health and food security interventions that promote healthy messages within their communities. Fostering collaboration with educational institutions and industry partners, it works to tailor job skills with digital media and communications training to meet the needs of urban and newly-urban Indigenous youth, arts, food and culture sector workers.
