At the heart of our programme is the Youth, Arts and Media Team, a transformative opportunity for Indigenous youth to engage in participatory food security research while honing their skills in arts, entrepreneurship and media literacy. As integral members of our communications team, youth receive comprehensive training and exposure to various food sector entrepreneurship roles. Through hands-on activities, they develop life, career and job skills, supporting outreach, relationship building, and engagement.

The Niriqatiginnga program places a strong emphasis on food sector literacy and training, equipping Inuit, First Nations and Métis youth with the knowledge and tools to design and deliver health and food security interventions that promote healthy messages within their communities. Fostering collaboration with educational institutions and industry partners, we tailor job skills training and media and communications training to meet the needs of urban and newly-urban Indigenous youth and community members.

Frosty Blueberry Bliss ...

Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) thrive in a diverse range of climates, but their cultivation also has its unique characteristics. These small, round berries begin their journey in the spring when delicate white blossoms adorn the blueberry bushes. These blossoms attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, ushering in the promise of a bountiful harvest.

Following successful pollination, the green berries slowly mature over the summer months. The ripening process varies depending on factors such as sunlight, temperature, and soil conditions. Typically, blueberries reach their peak ripeness from mid to late summer, transforming from crisp green to a luscious deep blue or purple hue.

The growth of blueberries is influenced by the environment they inhabit. While they can adapt to different conditions, they thrive in regions with acidic soil and ample sunlight. The challenges of cultivation, including pests, diseases, and weather fluctuations, require careful attention and management by growers.

Despite these challenges, the reward of cultivating blueberries is unmatched. Bursting with sweetness and packed with antioxidants, blueberries offer a taste of summer’s bounty. Whether enjoyed fresh, frozen, or in jams and pies, the journey from blossom to berry is a testament to nature’s resilience and the dedication of those who nurture these beloved fruits.
