Northern Community Consultation Notes

This summer, our Niriqatiginnga project team spent a lot of time consulting and engaging several community partners here in Winnipeg, and in Northern Manitoba. From farm to table, our program provides hands-on training in food production, quality control, and sustainable sourcing practices. Through workshops and mentorship, youth learn the ins and outs of food processing, packaging, and distribution, gaining valuable experience in every aspect of the food supply chain. By harnessing their creativity and cultural heritage, these aspiring entrepreneurs are not only creating delicious products but also building resilient businesses that contribute to community development and economic growth. With each purchase, you're not just indulging in gourmet treats; you're investing in the future of Indigenous and Inuit entrepreneurship in the thriving food sector. Join us in celebrating diversity, innovation, and culinary excellence.
The Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) will contribute approximately $13.5 million to projects that employ youth and youth facing barriers. Each project will be eligible to receive up to $14,000 in matching funds to employ one (1) employee. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is one of several Government of Canada departments participating in the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy.

This project supports SDG 2 by empowering Indigenous youth with entrepreneurship skills in the food sector and addressing food insecurity in northern communities through initiatives like "Aqpik Jalapeño," promoting local food systems and economic opportunities while ensuring access to nutritious and culturally relevant foods. Through mentorship, training, and community engagement, it contributes to the goal of achieving zero hunger by fostering sustainable livelihoods and promoting healthy eating habits in Indigenous communities.
